If you’ve ever tweeted your favorite song lyrics, shared a music video on Facebook or curated a Spotify playlist for your friends, you know the true power of how music can connect people in the digital age. This sort of connection had always sparked an interest for me, and choosing to pursue the Social Media Certificate at OU has turned that interest into a passion.
To provide a quick background; I’m a Junior BSS Student with my degree concentration in Music Business and Social Media Marketing. My career goal after college is to work as a Social Media Manager within the Music Industry. As a Social Media Certificate student of only one year, I have already gained invaluable knowledge and skills that I was able to fully utilize at my first internship this past summer.
Back in May, I made the trek to NYC to pursue an internship at Glassnote Records (home to artists such as Mumford & Sons, Childish Gambino, CHVRCHES, Phoenix, and more). As an intern of Glassnote’s Digital Department, I was able to put my knowledge of social media to the test. Day-to-day, I created content calendars for the label and its artists, strategized and executed new social media campaigns, and analyzed each network’s audience growth and engagement.
Perhaps the most fulfilling feeling I experienced while working at Glassnote was the sense of value that my knowledge of social media added to the team. Although general knowledge of social media is expected for public relations or marketing professionals, there were countless instances where a deep understanding of social media really made an immensely positive impact when it came to engaging an artist’s audience. Using knowledge of social media best practices, I was able assist in the construction of various digital marketing campaigns for some of my favorite artists.
My experience this past summer was tremendously rewarding. The Social Media Certificate courses I’ve taken have prepared me to succeed in the industry by not only teaching necessary strategies and skills to apply in the workplace, but emphasized the importance of how and why we communicate through new and changing social networking sites.
On top of the success I helped my team to achieve at Glassnote, I was able to assist some of my favorite artists of all time grow their audiences on social media, and engage their fans in new ways. Needless to say, it doesn’t get much cooler than that.
