By Mira Kuhar, certificate student coordinator
This past week, the certificate reached a milestone that I am insanely proud of. We would like to officially announce that we have hit 200 enrolled students! As the student coordinator and an enrolled student myself, it has been rewarding to see how the certificate has grown and matured over the past few years.
In my experience, I’ve learned that the certificate is such a rare and special program. There are very minimal schools that have implemented something like this, and many don’t even offer classes on the topic of social media. These topics we are gaining knowledge on and the skills we are learning are becoming more relevant as the digital realm continues to evolve. Digital and social media are basically a necessity in this day and age. Every company needs it, and everyone needs someone to do it for them.
I know that when I have done interviews for internships, I always get asked about my experience in the certificate. Just having it on my resume has actually landed me positions because it shows employers I have been properly trained and exposed to the things that I’ll be doing on an every day basis.
Other students have discovered this in their professional endeavors. Here are a few testimonials from students who found that the certificate has helped them as well:
“The social media certificate makes my resume stand out. In every internship interview, I get asked about the courses I’ve taken and I am able to speak about the variety of courses available to me.” Gentry Bennett, Junior, Strategic Communication
“The social media certificate and the classes within the program have been vital in implementing strategies within my internships here on campus.
Using these while managing Ohio University's Instagram account have proved exponential to my career aspirations.” Scotty Moore, Senior, Mediated Communication and Marketing
“As the director of media for the Southern Ohio Copperheads, I was responsible for various digital media content included but not limited to video, photography and last but certainly not least, social media. The certificate prepared me by teaching me how to analyze other teams’ successes and failures, create our brands voice and implement a successful social media plan” Becca Zook, Senior, Strategic Communication
“Last semester, I had a social media internship with a publishing company and it was a truly rewarding experience. Getting to learn the ins and outs of promotion and utilizing programs like Hootsuite and Tweetdeck were all things that I learned in the certificate program. It has helped me to grow as a professional and gather valuable skills for the my future endeavors.” Breyden Frascone, Sophomore, Screen Writing, Producing and Playwriting
Thanks to everyone who made this semester such a great one, we can’t wait to se where spring semester will take the certificate!
