Ohio University students will experience the frenzy and fun of creating a business idea while learning from students who have blazed their own entrepreneurial paths from 4 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Scripps Innovation Challenge Kickoff in Baker Ballroom.
Leah Petrovich can draw a straight line from her experience on the winning team for the 2013 Scripps Innovation Challenge to her first job.
“I credit my experience and success in the SIC to helping me land my role at this quickly growing tech start-up in New York City,” she said. Petrovich, a 2013 alumna of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, is a strategist for client success at Crowdtap, a rewards program for users.
Petrovich is one of many students at OHIO who found a place for her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit within the annual Scripps Innovation Challenge and leveraged it.
The Scripps Innovation Challenge is a university-wide student competition that encourages students to create innovative solutions to real-world media and communication problems.
Four students who have pursued different entrepreneurial paths will be sharing their experiences during the third annual Scripps Innovation Challenge kickoff event on Thursday, October 30 from 4-6 pm. in Baker Ballroom. The event introduces students to peers who will share why innovation and entrepreneurship should be a part of every student’s vocabulary and skillset.
At this year’s kickoff, students will also engage in hands-on fun during the Startup Simulator, where participants will imagine and create new ideas for business innovations. They’ll also learn key skills for generating successful solutions to the SIC.
“We wanted students to experience the excitement, craziness and jolt that comes from thinking outside the box,” said Dr. Michelle Ferrier, associate dean for innovation at the Scripps College of Communication. “We’re using a bit of improv and team building to get students to start thinking of new media ideas and businesses.”
Afterwards, students have the opportunity to mingle, find teammates and get started in this year’s challenge. Refreshments will be provided.
The deadline for team registration is Dec. 4. The challenge concludes on Pitch Day, March 23, 2015, when a panel of media professionals and business development experts will elect the best ideas. A total of $25,000 will be awarded to the winners, with the first place team winning $10,000 and a chance to advance in the new Scripps College of Communication International Innovators Cup.
The International Innovators Cup invites colleges and universities around the world to enter their best new media/communications business idea for this top international honor and a $5,000 cash prize.
