Next week, School of Media Arts and Studies Instructor Josh Antonuccio will be leading 26 OU students to Austin, TX for a week-long trip to South by Southwest (SXSW), as a part of the MDIA Global Opportunities program at Ohio University.
This exclusive industry immersion experience provides OU students with the opportunity to intersect with all arenas of the music, technology, and film industries at the largest media industry gathering of the year. SXSW offers an unparalleled convergence of the music, interactive, and film industries, providing OU students with both networking and educational opportunities.
“In terms of national gatherings of the creative and technology industries, SXSW is the heart of networking and sharing new ideas,” said Antonuccio. “OU students are able to interact with and learn from the leaders and thinkers that are influencing the fields they want to work in. This opportunity gives our students an edge for both educational and employment opportunities.”
OU students will be introduced to the leaders and entrepreneurs shaping creative industries through panel discussions, keynote addresses, interviews, and workshops. Some of this year's speakers and panelists include exclusive keynotes from Zane Lowe, Rapper T.I., Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, Mike Posner, and Mick Fleetwood, to name just a few. Along with immersive learning, OU MDIA students are provided with a series of one-on-one mentoring meetings with industry leaders in their field of choice. Networking with employers, colleagues, and potential clients is a major focus of the SXSW experience, resulting in exclusive opportunities for internships and future job positions.
At SXSW, students get to observe firsthand the scope and networks that exist within today’s current music and media industries. As well, attendees will have access to hundreds of showcases for established and upcoming artists in the evenings, getting to experience the best music of the year first hand. Following the trip, students present about their experience in panel discussions on campus. These presentations will be free and open for OU students wanting to learn about the trip experience, as well as media and music industry trends that were discussed at the conference.
