The Ohio University Scripps College of Communication, in partnership with the School of Media Arts & Studies, the Ohio University Performing Arts & Concert Series, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, WOUB Public Media, and Arts for OHIO, will welcome NPR Music’s Bob Boilen to Ohio University on Friday, April 12 for the Scripps Visiting Artist Series.
Boilen, the creator and host of NPR’s popular “Tiny Desk Concerts” and host of NPR’s “All Songs Considered”, will take part in a live on-campus interview event in the morning, moderate an afternoon discussion on music journalism, and then will host a music showcase in the evening at Stuart’s Opera House. Boilen will be joined by the genre-defying and widely-acclaimed band Tank & Bangas.
Coming from New Orleans, Tank and the Bangas are surrounded by plenty of grand musical traditions. And the five-piece group has a rare knack for combining various musical styles—fiery soul, deft hip-hop, deep-groove R&B and subtle jazz—into one dazzling, cohesive whole that evokes the scope of New Orleans music while retaining a distinctive feel all its own. The group won NPR’s 2017 Tiny Desk Concert Contest by unanimous acclaim, standing out among 6,000 entrants because of what Boilen called “the depth of their lyricism and the versatility of their players.”
Antonuccio will interview Boilen at Glidden Music Hall on Friday, April 12th, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The event will be live-streamed at mediaschool.ohio.edu. The two will be joined by members of Tank & the Bangas.
“Bob continues to serve as the nation’s foremost music curator,” said Josh Antonuccio, a Lecturer in the School of Media Arts & Studies and host of the Scripps Visiting Artist Series. “Tiny Desk Concerts has become an industry staple for authentic performances from the biggest artists of our time to new and emerging songwriters. Bob is beloved for his continued passion for discovery and musical exploration. We are thrilled to welcome him back to Ohio University.”
Boilen will be hosting a performance by Tank & the Bangas at the historic Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio, at 8 p.m.
General admission tickets are and will be made available through stuartsoperahouse.org. Admission for Ohio University students is free with a valid student ID, contingent on availability. Bus service from the Ohio University campus to Stuart’s Opera House will be made available for OHIO students on the night of the show.
