MDIA students were recently able to attend a Skype Q&A session with three professionals in the animation industry. Two of these were OU Alumni, Aaron Missler and Katie Frasier. Missler is employed by Shadow Machine, an animation studio and production company known for projects such as Robot Chicken and BoJack Horseman, and has worked as a line producer, project manager, and animator. Frasier works as an animator for South Park. In addition, the Q&A included Lauren Hecht, an animatic editor for Steven Universe of Cartoon Network.
The Q&A session started with each professional introducing themselves, detailing where they where originally from and what year they graduated, before turning it over to questions from the students. The students had a diverse set of interests – from animation, to gaming, to video – and were able to receive invaluable advice from the professionals. Topics included how to land internships and jobs, which skills to work on and develop during college, and how best to contribute to a team. In particular, it was noted that the TV animation industry is one which is subject to high amounts of pressure and fast-paced deadlines. Therefore, it is essential to have a good attitude and to be able to work as part of a team.
The professionals were able to offer advice and personal stories regarding life after graduation. They discussed all that they had learned from being immersed in the professional world, stressing the importance of things from drawing skills to internships. Overall, the Skype Q&A was an excellent opportunity for MDIA students to interact with professionals in the field.
Notably, Katie Frasier was recently featured in an article by the NY Times. See it here.
