Welcome back, Bobcats! I hope you all had a fantastic holiday break and are looking forward to a great spring semester. We have all survived week one and are ready to relax during a nice three day weekend. I’m sure that things have been hectic, and that you are looking for ways to be more productive this semester. Here are some little known, creative ways to stay productive throughout the semester using social media platforms.
1) Make Twitter lists to stay up to date on trending news
This is a great way to see all of the news accounts you follow in one place. Make a list of all accounts that post relevant news stories and you’ll have a collective running feed of updates 24/7. It’s important to separate these accounts from your friends and the other causal people you follow because it sometimes is hard to get through all the posts in one sitting. Also, by staying up to date with current events, it makes participating in class discussions easier and allows you to do research throughout the 15 weeks so you don’t have to scramble to find topics to write about later in the semester.
2) Organize your events on Facebook and hook them up to your Google Calendar
We all are constantly getting invited to events on Facebook. Whether they are events for our student organizations, get togethers with friends, family obligations or university-wide events, it gets hard to keep track of them all solely through Facebook. Sync these events to your Google Calendar or phone calendar for constant reminders so you never miss an event again. This can help with planning your weeks and days in advance so you don’t have to worry about squeezing in time for an event you may have forgot about.
3) Follow Ohio University and other university related Instagram accounts
There are plenty of awesome Ohio University related Instagram accounts out there to follow. Examples include @ohiouniversity, @ohiostuaffairs, @ohiobso, @ou_pingcenter, @scrippscollegeou, and many more. These accounts are always posting relevant and helpful information for students to stay on top of whats happening at the university and how they can get involved. Also, they post some pretty great pictures of campus, and why wouldn’t you want that on your newsfeed? Adding these accounts to your follower list is a simple way to stay updated and informed so you never miss a thing on campus.
4) Freshen up your LinkedIn and connect with fellow students
Periodically updating your LinkedIn throughout the semester with your experience takes off some of the stress of doing it all at the end of the 15 weeks. By doing this, it keeps your profile relevant and as you begin the internship and job search, employers will be impressed to see that you’re constantly active and keeping your profile up to date. Also along these lines, connect with fellow classmates as the semester goes on. Some professors actually require you to have a certain amount of new connections by the end of the semester, and I thing there is a lot of benefit in doing this constantly. Connect with the people in your classes this semester and keep your connections soaring so you have more people to reach out to in the future.
