Undergraduate Program Learning Objectives
Graduates of the School of Media Arts and Studies will:
- Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze media for their social, cultural, aesthetic, and historical significance.
- Demonstrate understanding of the business imperatives that influence the creation of media products, including economic, legal, policy, audience, and buyer.
- Demonstrate creativity and storytelling skills through production of innovative media content.
- Develop technical competencies needed to perform the creative, business, and academic work required in media professions.
- Demonstrate understanding of media from a global perspective.
- Develop leadership competencies that enable effective communication and collaboration within media organizations or teams.
Assessment Plan
The School of Media Arts & Studies carries out assessment of learning objectives though capstone courses in each of its five undergraduate majors— Games and Animation, Integrated Media, Media and Social Change, Music Production Recording Industry, Integrated Media, and Screenwriting and Producing.
In addition, the School mounts focus groups conducted among graduating seniors each year. These provide an opportunity for self-evaluation of the achievement of learning objectives by students.
Formative Evaluations
The School’s Assessment Committee meets regularly and in Fall Semester reviews learning objectives for possible modification. These reviews are based upon data collected in the previous year’s assessment process. Particularly important is the report obtained from the previous Spring’s focus group studies.
Summative Results
The results of assessment activities are collected and summarized by the Assessment Committee of the School and recommendations for curricular adjustments are passed to the Undergraduate Committee.
